Producer Élida (Lita) Stantic has been active in Argentine cinema since the mid-sixties, including her collaboration in the 80s with Maria Luisa Bemberg whose films returned Argentine cinema to the bright light of international acclaim after years in the darkness. Through her company Lita Stantic Producciones, she has played 'madrina (godmother)' to many of the directors of the New Argentine Cinema, producing the critically acclaimed début features of Israel Adrián Caetano, Pablo Trapero and Lucrecia Martel. LA CIÉNAGA garnered acclaim from festival juries, critics and audiences worldwide and represents the exciting cinema that has emerged from Argentina in the past decade. Mecha and her large family spend the summer at a rundown country estate. Her cousin Tali lives in the town nearby with her sprawling brood. Two accidents bring the families together where borders blur as they attempt to survive a summer from hell. A story of ordinary lives where strangeness represents the norm, the film’s power lies in its evocative use of detail to create a painfully real parallel universe.
