Each year, Cornerhouse Engagement presents study sessions for GCSE, AS and A2 students. A screening of a specially chosen film from the festival is used as a focus for Spanish language exercises and discussion on relevant specification topics. There is also an INSET session for teachers.
Please note study sessions will be open to students aged 14-19 years old and their personal tutors only.
Study Guides will be available for each study sessions. They will also be available to download form the website soon.
Mon 8 March, 10:00 – 13:00
Recommended for GCSE and equivalent level Spanish
This session will use El Viaje de Teo (Teo’s Journery) to focus on and discuss the topics of childhood, relationships with family and friends, immigration, and the relationship between Mexico and the USA.
Lead by Carmen Herrero, Head of Spanish at Manchester Metropolitan University and Ana Valbuena, Spanish Language Tutor at the Instituto Cervantes. The session includes a full screening of El Viaje de Teo.

Recommended for AS and equivalent level Spanish
In this AS study session, Carmen Herrero and Ana Valbuena will use Amorosa Soledad (Lovely, Loneliness) as a basis for discussion and language exercises. Topics to be covered in this session include relationships and independence, the world of work, health, and youth culture in Argentina. The session includes a full screening of Amorosa Soledad.
Please note the majority of this session will be conducted in Spanish.

Recommended for A2 and equivalent level Spanish
Carmen Herrero and Ana Valbuena will use Retorno a Hansala as a basis for language exercises and thematic discussion focusing on social and political issues including immigration in Spain, the world of work, multiculturalism and female identity. The session includes a full screening of Retorno a Hansala.

Recommended for teachers of GCSE, AS and A2 Spanish
This INSET is designed to provide teachers with the necessary tools to explore multiculturalism through film. Carmen Herrero will provide a brief ‘how to read a film’ guide, exploring different filmic approaches through scene analysis. Examining themes including immigration and racism, opportunities will be given to practice different types of exercises to be transferred to the classroom. Case studies will include: Un franco 14 pesetas (Carlos Iglesias, 2006), El truco del manco (Santiago Zannou, 2008), Un novio para Yasmina (Irene Cardona, 2008) and Retorno a Hansala (Chus Gutiérrez, 2008).
